With Unassigned Territory, guitarist/composer David Pritchard expands upon his unique approach to acoustic guitar music which was debuted in his last recording, Air Patterns. On Unassigned Territory he is joined by fellow acoustic guitarists Dale Turner, Joseph Jewell, and Jack Majdecki. In addition, the guitar quartet is joined on three cuts by vocalist Teri De Sario.
Pritchard started off his musical career as a jazz guitarist with vibist Gary Burton. He also freelanced in groups with ex-Mother of Invention Don Preston and keyboardist Billy Childs. Pritchard also recorded two LP’s for Inner City Records which featured Patrice Rushen, Chester Thompson, and Freddie Hubbard. But with the release of his last record, Air Patterns, he moved out of the jazz realm and into a new acoustic, minimalistic, more classically-influenced direction. The results were hypnotic, mesmerizing musical landscapes characterized by shifting, overlapping meters and sparkling melodic patterns.
With Unassigned Territory Pritchard continues this musical direction, but with two differences: Unassigned Territory features Pritchard with three other acoustic guitarists, while all the guitar parts were overdubbed in Air Patterns. This results in even more musical interplay and warmth. Secondly, brilliant vocalist Teri De Sario has been added to the mix, her voice blending seamlessly with the acoustic guitar ensemble on three tracks which comprise a moving musical mosaic, making Unassigned Territory an exquisite listening experience not to be missed by anyone who loves music that reaches the heart and soul.
